History of Segal Locks

The original Segal lock was developed in 1912 by Samuel Segal, a New York
City Police Officer who saw a need to protect residents form thieves "Jimmying"
or spreading the door frame to gain entry. The lock was quickly accepted
as the best way to secure a door against unauthorized entry due to physical
attack.
Samuel Segal was featured in the Locksmith Ledger in May of 1955 for his innovations and contributions to the locksmith industry. |

During the mid 1900's, the Segal Lock Company grew in size and added over 100 products to its security hardware product line and quickly became a household name in may parts of the U.S. The products were manufactured in Norwalk, Connecticut, near the original manufacturing site. In the 1950's, Segal lock company came under new management and ownership, and was manufactured under license agreement by the New England Lock Company. |

In the early 1990's, Segal locks became available through Do-It-Yourself chains, making it more convenient for consumers to purchase and install the products themselves |

In 1998, New England Lock Company was purchased by ASSA ABLOY AB, and renamed to NEL Co. The products still retained the Segal brand as the company prepared to make changes to ensure the quality and security of future products. |

In 2008 Segal Lock Company was purchased by Prime-Line Products with the intention of continuing the long tradition of supplying high quality door locks. |
